Feeding types of extruders

Extrusion lines, from the feeding point of view, can be divided into two categories:

– “full” screw extruders
– “empty” screw extruders

The full screw extruders are characterized by the fact that the material flows by gravity into the extruder and is not dosed. In this case is the extruder which determines the output of the line. For this type of extruder can be provided dosing systems that allow accumulation of material on the mouth of the extruder, such as systems with mixers or dosage systems in which at least one component is fed to the extruder by gravity.

The empty screw extruders, on the other hand, must be fed by a dosage system. In this case it’s the feeding system of the extruder which determines the output of the line by feeding the extruder. For this type of extruder the dosage of one or more components can not be by gravity but the materials must be dosed in the extruder at a speed (output) necessarily lower than that of extruder.

These two types of extrusion systems affect in a structural way the type of dosing system to be employed.

Full screw extruders

For this type of extruder can be provided dosing systems that allow accumulation of material on the mouth of the extruder, such as systems with mixers or dosage systems in which at least one component is fed to the extruder by gravity.

PLASCO offers following equipment for these extruders:

G series for granule or ground material

VOLUMETRIC
DVG – dosage unit
MVG – mixer

GRAVIMETRIC
GRAVI – batch system

P series for powder and fibre

VOLUMETRIC
DVP – dosage unit
MVP – mixer

Empty screw extruders

Empty screw extruders, on the other hand, must be fed by a dosage system. In this case it’s the feeding system of the extruder which determines the output of the line by feeding the extruder.
